Impressionism and Beyond – Masterpieces from the Detroit Institute of Arts at the Ara Pacis

From 4 December 2025 to 3 May 2026, the Ara Pacis Museum presents Impressionism and Beyond, an exceptional exhibition featuring 52 masterpieces from the renowned Detroit Institute of Arts, one of the most important art museums in the United States.

The exhibition guides visitors from the birth of Impressionism — with its break from academic tradition and its exploration of light, colour and immediacy — to the artistic revolutions of the early twentieth century. Works by Courbet, Renoir, Degas, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Matisse, Picasso, Modigliani, Kandinsky, Beckmann and many others trace the evolution of modern painting between innovation, experimentation and new expressive languages.

Among the highlights are Renoir’s Woman in an Armchair and Cézanne’s Bathers, rarely loaned outside the United States and emblematic of the artists’ research on the human figure, spatial composition and the interplay between reality and interpretation.

A must-see for anyone who loves art history and wishes to experience the masterpieces that shaped modernity.
