Rome the Painter. Female Artists at Work Between the 16th and 19th Centuries

The exhibition “Roma Pittrice. Women Artists at Work between the 16th and 19th Centuries” is currently on display at the Museum of Rome at Palazzo Braschi. Curated by Ilaria Miarelli Mariani, director of the Civic Museums Directorate of the Capitolina Superintendency, and Raffaella Morselli from the University of Rome La Sapienza, with support from Ilaria Arcangeli of the University of Chieti, the exhibition provides an in-depth look at the women artists who worked in Rome from the 16th to the 19th century.

The exhibition explores the vast and diverse female artistic output of this period, highlighting talents that have long been overlooked in art history. Featuring approximately 130 works, the exhibition celebrates female figures from the Capitoline collections, such as Caterina Ginnasi, Maria Felice Tibaldi Subleyras, Angelika Kaufmann, Laura Piranesi, Marianna Candidi Dionigi, Louise Seidler, and Emma Gaggiotti Richards. In addition, it honors other prominent artists active in Rome, like Lavinia Fontana, Artemisia Gentileschi, Maddalena Corvina, Giovanna Garzoni, and others whose work has been rediscovered through recent research.

Through representative themes and figures, the exhibition examines the various styles, genres, and techniques explored by these artists, as well as their gradual entry into the international art market and, albeit slowly, access to prestigious institutions such as the Accademia di San Luca and the Accademia dei Virtuosi al Pantheon.
